NOTE TRAY UNIT
"ONE EVERY 30 SECONDS"

DESCRIPTION

One of the most important industrial processes is mass production.  Before being expected to develop a production run students need to experience a well planned run where they produce a nice, completely finished, low cost product in a very short time.  This unit provides that experience.

The tray is made of wood and finished with water based Danish oil.  The students start with dimension stock, cut each piece to length, cut a taper on the sides, cut a curve on the bottom end, drill holes, start escutcheon pins and nails, glue, assemble, sand an apply the finish.  Adding a desk pen is optional.

All of this at a production rate of "ONE EVERY 30 SECONDS".  I used the unit with several different classes over the years.  One class reached a production rate of one every 15 seconds, but they had to be slowed down, they were having too many defects.

                                                         ESTIMATED TIME
Depends upon the amount of time you wish.  It takes one full period to train the workers, then they should produce about 2 a minute.  There will be some time winding everything up and cleaning up.  There will be a time when all of the materials move through the line.  For instance, the person at station 2 will finish quite a while before the last station.

Figure 1 period to train, 1 to run the production, and 1 to finish, clean up and put things away.  If you want to make more units, run as many days as needed.
